a bit of history!

The SOLO Chambers is a beautifully restored, historical property in the heart of the picturesque market town of Sleaford, where modernity meets historical character in its relaxing rooms and facilities. The property is on Market Street, which is just off Sleaford’s medieval marketplace, and it is near to a range of local bars, restaurants, and shops. There are also a range of interesting culture spots within walking distance of the property, including a working Georgian theatre and various art galleries showcasing the work of local artists.

Market Street has been a melting pot of personalities for centuries as Sleaford grew into a bustling centre for trade and industry. One George Smedley made this property his home in 1851 when he worked as a printer and pressman, whilst his wife worked independently as a dealer in glass and china – she was clearly the person to know if you needed a new cup and saucer for your afternoon tea!

Since the 1850s, Market Street has also boasted a wide variety of interesting inhabitants, including a stone quarry overseer, a straw bonnet maker, cleaners, dress makers, milliners, solicitors, grocers, engineers, teachers, ironmongers, and a boarding school – Coronation Street clearly has nothing on Market Street! This close-knit community helped put Sleaford on the map, and the echoes of their community ties and daily life can still be felt in the historic buildings on the street.

Market Street is a stone’s throw from Sleaford’s marketplace which stills holds its weekly market and St Denys’ Church. This beautiful medieval church may have existed in some form before the Doomsday Book, and was expanded in a major building project over the 12th century to become the centrepiece of Sleaford’s modern skyline.

History runs deep in Sleaford’s streets, with the town being described by The Gazetteer of England and Wales (1895) as being host to the “site of a Roman station, and formerly a palatial castle of the bishops of Lincoln, in which King John spent a night after leaving Swineshead Abbey, when he was seized by his fatal illness on the way to Newark Castle where he died in 1216.”

In 1541, another King of England visited Sleaford (with much less fatal consequences!) when Henry VIII held a council meeting at Sleaford Castle on his way to Lincoln. The nearby River Slea has been the lifeblood of the town for centuries, including when the Sleaford Navigation helped bring trade down from the River Witham and further afield from the eighteenth century.

For a quaint market town, Sleaford has definitely seen its fair share of history and personalities!

The owner is absolutely brilliant, so helpful and courteous. I’d recommend based on him alone but that’s overlooking the cleanliness of the rooms, the fantastic location and the facilities available. 10/10 if I’m ever back in the area I shall be returning. Cheers.

It was a lovely stay. The property was in a great location, with stylish decor and really well appointed (definitely as the photos suggest). Our room had a pleasant view of the pretty street below. We were really impressed with our whole experience; our hosts were very responsive to our queries, very friendly and check-in was smooth and straightforward.
We would really recommend this property!
